Zhuotong well
Zhuotong Well is a living fossil of handmade salt. It is a salt well made with upright and thick bamboo tubes to absorb brine. It was invented during the Qingli period of the Northern Song Dynasty (1041-1048 AD) and was drilled deep underground using a conical frame with a circular blade shaped drill bit and a percussive method, more than 800 years earlier than in the West. Its caliber is only the size of a bamboo tube, but it can drill wells up to tens of zhang deep. It is the earliest small caliber deep well drilling technology invented by humans and the ancestor of civilization that went underground. It pioneered the Western rope drilling technology and opened the prelude to human exploration of underground treasures.
